Mains Detector Creation

From Aeon HACS Wiki

  1. If using a 6ft usb A-B cable, cut the cable at the usb B side.
  2. Remove about 2" of cable insulation.
    • Using an x-acto blade mark a ring around the cable at the length to be removed.
      • Typically a shallow mark here is desired - the goal is to weaken the insulation, not slice through it completely potentially damaging the wires inside.
    • Bend the cable at this mark and use the blade to gently finish separating any still connected insulation.
    • Slide the now separated insulation off the end of the wire.
  3. Remove any exposed sheathing.
  4. Snip the unused wires.
    • A USB 2.0 cable consists of 4 wires. Green & white for data, and black & red for power.
    • Snip the green and white wires so they barely stick out of the insulation, taking care to ensure their ends are not the same length with and are also separate from any remaining sheathing.
  5. Surround the exposed sheathing and snipped green & white wires with heat shrink.
  6. Apply female Molex pins to both the black and red wires.
  7. Insert the pins into a 3x1 Molex housing. Black should be on pin 1 and red should be on pin 3, with nothing on pin 2.
