A mains detector is used to detect if system power goes down. It consists of two parts - a 5V power adapter and a modified USB 2.0 cable, typically 6ft in length.

5V power adapter

The 5V power adapter does not require any modifications, but it is important that it is plugged into a slot on the UPS that only provides surge protection - not battery backup.

USB 2.0 cable

The kept connector on the USB 2.0 cable must be able to connect to the 5V power adapter. Typically this will be a Type-A connection.
